My Teaching PHILOSOPHY
As a life-long learner, I have gleaned knowledge over the course of decades from teachers and colleagues alike to come up with a comprehensive and up-to-date teaching method. This evolved method still retains some of the highly successful techniques I have used since my childhood, including for example, the Liszt Method and the more traditionally taught Paris Conservatory and Tabuteau methods.
I am happy to teach everyone from young professional flutists preparing for auditions to adult amateurs and even beginning children who don’t read music yet.
Long term weekly students have been accepted to conservatories and universities across the globe including New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Paris Conservatory and Peabody.
In addition to teaching weekly students, I am also willing to teach students as frequently or infrequently as they choose on a lesson to lesson basis.
I have taught extensively in person and by Skype, and by the latter method, have taught students as far away as Bulgaria and Korea. I never tire of meeting new students and helping them acquire the tools they need to go forward in life and eventually become their own best teacher.
“Helen Campo is one of the rare special artists one hopes to come across in a lifetime who is both a world-class player AND teacher! Her teaching prowess has done wonders for my students and for me. If you are looking for serious help from a master with a pleasant and intelligent demeanor, you need look no further than Helen Campo. I can tell you that she is a MASTER teacher! Like any great educator, Ms. Campo has the ability to assess any students’ needs and abilities quickly, while offering them immediate assistance accompanied by long term goals and strategies. When you combine that with her lifetime achievements as a professional musician, you have the absolute best of both worlds.”
“Helen has inspired me to improve as a flutist far beyond what I had ever thought possible. She is extremely generous in sharing the synthesis of her extraordinary training and professional experience. Although I have been fortunate to have wonderful teachers in the past, none have offered the secrets of flute playing with the graciousness and clarity that Helen regularly delivers.

“It is hard to put into words everything that Helen Campo, my flute teacher and mentor, has done for my musical development and career. She was my principal teacher for seven years and continued to be a mentor and a constant inspiration from afar while I completed my studies at Peabody Institute.
Her gift for identifying the exact technical difficulty hindering the arc of a musical line or the brilliancy of a passage never ceases to amaze me.
Her intricate, working knowledge of the physiology of flute playing is an incredible resource that she puts to use in our lessons, where she will not only identify a technical or musical issue but go further by working with me on micro physical adjustments or reframing the issue mentally, whatever is called for at the moment.
I would describe her teaching as always holistic, respectful and very exciting. I always left every lesson more resolute that music is what I want to dedicate my life to, and armed with a toolbag of how to go about this crazy, beautiful adventure.

“Helen Campo is an incredibly perceptive and intuitive teacher. Performing orchestral excerpts for her has been an essential part of audition preparation. She patiently analyzes and addresses both the physical and mental elements of performing, and develops creative and innovative solutions.

“As a young freelancer in New York City navigating the shift from school to the real world, I have found Helen Campo to be not only a great teacher but a great mentor.
Helen has helped with all aspects of my flute playing from tone, technique, and interpretation to audition preparation and performance anxiety to career planning.”
“
My daughter has been taking flute lessons from Mrs. Helen Campo for one year. I found her full of care and enthusiasm with the utmost professionalism. My daughter looks forward to the flute lessons with pleasurable anticipation. I and my daughter are very happy with Mrs. Campo.

“I am amazed at the progress that my ten-year-old daughter has made after just four virtual flute lessons with Helen! It is a joy to hear Helen play duets with my daughter, and even more of a joy to listen to the kind, patient manner in which Helen teaches my vibrant child who has very little flute experience. My daughter has picked up tips and tricks that only someone with Helen’s experiences can share. The personalized, one-on-one flute instruction is helping my daughter excel in her band class at school.
”
“Helen is able to blend highly technical training with care and enthusiasm in such a way that has really helped our daughter to grow as a musician. Helen’s positive energy and attention to detail helps to create a nurturing learning environment that is both fun and challenging. We are thrilled to see how much our daughter enjoys her lessons and how much she is learning from Helen.
